As a journalism student I am very interested in expressing my opinions and I think that the sustainability of not only natural resources but of minority groups is becoming far more relevant as we continue to evolve and grow. As the world increasingly becomes a global community we run the risk of losing touch with our own cultures and the cultures of those around us.
One has only to look at West Papua to see what the need for natural resources such as oil and metals does to a peoples, the Papuan’s run the risk of losing their culture forever as a result of the Free Port mines and the occupying Indonesian forces. We are in fact entering into a new error of colonialism, one that is driven by sustainability.
I believe that the countries of the world should look to New Zealand as an example of allowing a minority group, Maori to flourish and re-establish their traditions and language.
I hope that this blog will look at the issues surronding not only the sustainabilty of people by the topic as a whole.
